Things of Much Excite

I figured this should be a thing, right?
I get excited about a lot being a fangirl, so this new feature naturally popped up as an option. Similar to things I need, this will be a list of things I’m looking forward to within my fandoms. Hopefully there will be some overlap with all of yours as well. ;)

1. Star Wars Tease

It’s JJ, it’s Star Wars. What else could be better? Seems like it will be at select theaters only this Friday. I will just sit back and allow the Internets to give it to me the lazy way though. What are your expectations? I’m personally a huge Abrams fan and bow down to all his work, so I have extremely high expectations and know he will deliver.

Nerdvember: Outfit #3

Who else misses the BBC’s Sherlock?
I know I do. Since we have a pretty unbearable wait ahead of us, I try my best to fill the void by watching episodes as much as I can and apparently, wearing Sherlock-themed outfits.  I may have gotten a few strange looks due to my “high functioning sociopath” pin, but it’s all worth it to this fangirl.

What I love the most about putting together these fun geeky outfits for Nerdvember is that it challenges me to not only theme out what I’m wearing (which is so much fun), but also gives me the extra challenge to make it subtle. Not that I don’t like bold fandom statements, but I personally like to bring it down a few notches for daily wear. Mainly because it’s so fun when someone actually gets the reference! Quotes definitely do the trick, but unfortunately, no one I ran into while wearing this outfit made the connection. Boo hiss, Miami!

Geek Girl Brunch: Miami

Local ladies: I am so excited to announce this great news!

I’ve been a big fan of Jamila’s blog, Girl Gone Geek, for some time now. Her style is on point and we share many (if not all) of the same fandoms. She is also the co-founder of Geek Girl Brunch. Geek Girl Brunch is a monthly meetup group of geeky girls in a brunch setting (mimosas are a must) that are set to a particular theme (their magical girl brunch was one of my favorites). This group was only set in NYC, but I was so happy when I heard they were looking to expand to other cities and even countries! I was so in.

Thankfully, Jamila entrusted me and I will be one of the officers for the Miami chapter of Geek Girl Brunch!!!! I will be sharing duties with the amazing Aurora, who if you remember, was our first guest on The Fangirl Diaries (check out our podcast together here). We will be officially launching in April 2015, but will be hard at work until then getting together the most perfect inaugural brunch!

In the meantime, if you are local and interested in joining the fun, head over to Geek Girl Brunch and click “Join Geek Girl Brunch.” This will immediately put you on our list. You can also start following us on social media for the latest and greatest;

Animate Miami 2014

This year was my first attending Animate Miami, and I had a great time! I had always wanted to cosplay as a Sailor Scout for as long as I could remember, but lets face it. If you want to really look the part, you have to spend some major bucks. Luckily, the Australian clothing brand, Living Dead Clothing created the most adorable Sailor Scout skater dresses that screamed everyday cosplay. I’d featured the Sailor Jupiter dress in past must haves, and I finally took the plunge and bought it! I was able to pair it with some amazing accessories from Etsy seller, UniqueCosplayProps.

It was so fun walking around and finding other fellow Moonies that were cosplaying – I think you could say that I caught the cosplay bug big time. I’m already putting together my next cosplay for Magic City Comic Con (& it’s going to be awesome)! Although Animate seemed very small – I was happy to see some of my old favorites, such as Brian and Matt Reedy and Jessica Grundy, as well as some new ones, like Silvertales. I also really wish the A/C was turned up a little more – it was wicked cold (at times, uncomfortably so) especially in my outfit.

I missed the voice actors for Sailor Moon since I went on Sunday (boo hiss), but I expected more Sailor Moon merch! I’ve been trying to find some fun and unique pieces at all the cons I’ve gone to but haven’t been successful. The closest I got was this killer Sailor Moon art print from Matt Reedy (which is adorable), but I hope to find more – don’t let me down, Magic City!

Nerdvember: Outfit #2

I told you I’d be back with more fun geeky outfits to share for this month’s Nerdvember! This time, I’m posting a pretty sweet find from Target (who knew). Usually I get frustrated with Target since they let all the boys have the fun when it comes to geeky threads, however, I was blown away when I saw that we had a few shelves of fandom tees this week! I naturally gravitated towards a sweet vintage My Little Pony tee (to be showcased at a later date), but my heart fluttered when I saw this absolutely perfect Thor baseball tee. Since they didn’t have it in my size, I had to buy it one size too big, but I definitely did not care. It had to be mine.

And I’m so glad I made that decision. I mean…isn’t it the cutest?

Nerdy Must Haves

It’s time for yet another episode of Nerdy Must Haves.
With the holiday season slowly creeping upon us, there is even more geeky goodness for us to feast our eyes on. This can be both overwhelming and awesome all at once for a shopaholic like myself, and just downright tragic for my wallet. Oh well, someone’s gotta live this coveted geek life, amirite?

Clockwise from top left;

1. Darth Vader studs; Her Universe slays it again with this pair of understated yet bad ass black hermatite Darth Vader studs. One way to remind others that the Dark Side has a classy side as well.
2. Marvel ugly sweater; I’m pretty sure I’ll be attending my first ugly sweater party this year, so I was pumped. Now, everyone knows doing flat out ugly just isn’t my thing, but this Marvel sweater? It was just all sorts of perfect. I can rock the geek chic while still being a little tacky (I mean, excessive patterning anyone?).
3. Tardis in space tote; I am so digging this subtle design. The more and more I work in my field of behavior analysis, the more I appreciate a good tote bag. You tend to accumulate all sorts of toys, reinforcers and general fun stuff as you grow as a therapist so I have multiple totes that I…well…tote around often. I can definitely see myself rocking this one to some of my sessions (hoping and praying someone would get the reference).
4. Sailor Moon body con skirt; I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first time I feature a Sailor Moon body con related item, but I just can’t help myself. I’m an addict and I’m OK with that. If I could permanently dress up as a Sailor Scout I would, and I’m pretty sure that’s an acceptable life decision. I mean, I’m an adult. Other adults feel the same because the skirt is currently sold out. Wah!

Nerdvember: Outfit #1

Have you guys heard of Nerdvember?

It’s an Instagram contest being held by the lovely ladies of Set to Stunning. They are challenging all us lady geeks to sport our best geeky outfits for a chance to win some pretty fun prizes. I put together my first outfit this week for the challenge, and hope to participate more over the span of the month. Not only is it fun to put together outfits, but searching the hashtag has made me stumble on some new geeky insta-friends! Win/win!

Details of my first Nerdvember outfit;

Tank; c/o Jordan Dene
Pants; Stitchfix {similar}
Jacket; Forever 21 {similar}
Kitty flats; Jane.com {similar}
{with a special appearance by Sting because swords}

I’ve been having days where I flip flop from extreme happiness and clarity to debilitating anxiety and dark thoughts. When I want to exude a certain energy, I usually try to dress the part. Sure, it may seem silly, but I believe in the power of fashion and appearance. If you look good and, in this case, are sporting a powerfully positive message by one of the most amazing men in science, how can you feel bad? Granted, I paired this outfit with a 2-4-1 drink special at Chili’s, but I’m still going with the outfit, ok?

Have you been participating? If so, please share your adorkable outfits in the comments!

Easy Fangirl Halloween Costumes

Halloween is this weekend!!!!! Do you have your costume?
If you don’t, that’s OK!  Here are some really quick fandom costumes you can put together with pieces from your closet or easy finds at a local store!

Femme 11th Doctor; Matt Smith had some of the hippest costuming in Doctor Who history, so of course, his outfits are some of the most recreated for cons and Halloween. It helps that it is easily translated for us ladies! All you need is a white button down blouse, a pair of shorts, red suspenders and a red bow tie, topped with a fez! And if you are a good Whovian, you already have your Sonic handy. Easy peasy!

Lumpy Space Princess; God I love this character! She sends me into a fit of hysterical laughter each time and dressing up as her is so immensely easy! All you need is a purple dress or purple top and purple skirt. Basically: find all the purple things. Get a purple wig and slap on a big foam yellow star to complete the look. And, of course, bring your best LSP attitude – lump off!

Sailor Moon; I am really loving the every day cosplay trend because you can grab any of your dresses and play them up with accessories for the easiest costume! Living Dead Clothing has the most adorable Sailor Scout dresses that you can pair with corresponding earrings, tiaras, etc. to complete the look. I especially love this bestie duo rocking the femme Tuxedo Mask!

Hogwarts Students; By far the easiest costume to put together on a budget and time crunch. I definitely rocked this look one Halloween when I was a broke grad student! Did you go to private school? Score. You just got your Hogwarts uniform. I used an old school blouse and skirt from my high school uniform and snagged a cheap gray V-neck sweater from Walmart. To add some special touches, I painted the collar in Gryffindor gold and red with fabric markers. Although, you can skip the sweater entirely like the ladies above and just rock the ties (c’mon, you know you have 1, 2 or 10 in your fandom collection).

Diagon Alley Visit

I hope all of you survived the Mercury Retrograde unscathed. I can’t necessarily say I did, but thankfully I closed it out with a visit to Diagon Alley in Orlando! I had been ridiculously excited to see what they had done with the expansion, and I was not disappointed. The new park is perfection. The best part is, I’m pretty sure we only touched on all the amazing nooks and crannies of the place. I can’t wait to go again and see everything else we missed!

The butterbeer ice cream was probably the only disappointment. Granted, I was downing a frozen butterbeer right before I tasted it, so I don’t know if the two flavors competed with each other, but it just tasted like vanilla ice cream topped with caramel. Pretty bland. Otherwise, everything was on point. Knockturn Alley was a definite highlight of mine. I always mentioned that the deatheaters presence was not made known when we only had Hogsmeade, so I’m really really happy they brought a little darkness to the park. Without it, there would be no Potter.

I also really liked visiting Ollivanders. I feel like their wand selection and quality improved (especially with the new addition of interactive wands). It was a pretty magical experience. We all ended up taking home wands, but it was such a tough decision for all of us. I finally settled on Luna, which brought us all to thinking who we really are in the Potter universe in comparison to who we’d like to be. As much as I admire Hermione and her intelligence, quick wit and independence, I know I am 100% Luna. Quirky, weird, fiercely loyal and loving.

What I Wore: Groving

I love me a good Sunday Funday. I’ve been traveling for what seems like ages, but now that I finally have my feet planted back on the ground of my home city, I took advantage by doing what I love to do best: strolling around one of my favorite neighborhoods. Coconut Grove used to be all the rage while I was growing up, but I feel like it is kind of having another renaissance. I see it now as a more laid back alternative to the crazy beach crowd and hipster Wynwood scene. It has a very hippy kind of vibe, which makes me happy on gorgeous days like these in Miami.
