1. Muse: The Resistance
1. Muse: The Resistance

Besides the Smashing Pumpkins, I can’t really say I love a band more than Muse. Not very surprising since they have a lot of similar characteristics musically. What can I say? I’m predictable. Either way, this band blows my mind on a regular basis so I had been impatiently waiting for their new album for what seems like ages. Finally, there was a leak this week and I didn’t think twice before hitting the download button. I know people are going to hate because that’s what people do, but my GOD is this album good. I can only describe it as an eargasm – I would make love to every track, no joke. What other band can close their album with a 3-part symphony? Absolutely no one, but Muse. My favorite of the moment? Undisclosed Desires. It could be described as Smashing Pumpkins & Depeche Mode’s song baby and it is all sorts of awesome. Have I mentioned that I am going to see them open up for U2 next month in Tampa? Because I am so excited I could burst. I’ve never seen them live and although we have nosebleed seats (seriously, who can afford decent U2 tickets???), I am going to be happier than a pig in shit. No joke. Plus, there are rumors that they will be playing a 12 song set, much longer than typical openers (because they are awesome, hello)! So if you are going, I’ll be the certifiably insane fangirl singing and dancing like a fool. Feel free to come over and flail with me.

1. Billy Corgan & his Spirits in the Sky
1. Billy Corgan & his Spirits in the Sky

Billy Corgan’s latest venture is being labeled as a “supergroup,” but I just like to think of Spirits in the Sky as a group of talented musicians that got together to have a little fun. The Spirits got together in remembrance of Sky Saxon, the Seeds’ singer/bassist that passed away earlier this year from an organ infection. The group includes Dave Navarro, Linda Strawberry, Mike Byrne (the Pumpkins’ new 19 year old drummer) and former members of other psychedelic 70’s bands. They decided to play to small crowds in tiny venues (such as Muddy Waters Coffee Shop) around Southern California and from the footage I have heard and seen, it was quite the show! Corgan premiered a few new songs, which can always be a little scary for a big Pumpkins fan like myself, but I was beyond impressed. The new material sounds great! I just wish they would have decided to mosey on over to our neck of the woods. Why does California get all the good stuff? Anywho, I’m happy for Billy because I know at this point in his life, what he wants to do more than anything, is just play good music for the fun of it. And he definitely seemed to achieve that with Spirits in the Sky.

1. Kickball Parties
1. Kickball Parties

As you can tell from yesterday’s post, I love stumbling upon blogs of talented people that also happen to enjoy life to the fullest. A perfect example is Jessica Claire. Jessica is a wedding photographer who mixes personal posts along with her professional ones on her blog. One amazing post revolved around her 30th birthday, which she celebrated by holding an epic game of kickball with all her closest friends. Uh. Amazing. So much so that I hope Jessica doesn’t get insulted because I’m totally ripping off the idea for the hubs’ birthday this year. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? ;)

Tune-age Tuesday

I figured it had been entirely too long since I had put together a mixtape to share with all of you. Plus, I’ve heard through the grapevine that a lot of you out there favor my husband’s mixtapes over mine. I just cannot let that happen. ;)

picture-11

It’s a mix of old and new, as every good thing should be. I hope you all enjoy it and I hope I managed to turn some of you on to some great new (or old) artists. I’ll make sure to start posting these a little more regularly…maybe quarterly or so that you guys can get an idea of what I’m listening to! After all, music is the glue of the world.

While a (very active) member of Livejournal a few years back, I absolutely adored meme’s. I would do as many as humanly possible, which I’m sure annoyed a great deal of my LJ friends. The draw still hasn’t escaped me, because I’ve decided to include them from time to time here on Melificent. Afterall, sometimes I am not in the most journalistic of moods.

So enjoy this fun picture meme and if you feel so inclined, do one yourself!

1. District-9
1. District-9

After hearing about this movie for months and attending a panel at Comic-Con, I am so excited the premiere date for District-9 is here! We have tickets to a showing tonight with a group of friends and I can’t wait! In case you are one of the 4 people that have not heard of this movie, it is set in a time where aliens have landed on Earth, but have been segregated from the general public in an area called District-9. I’ll make sure to put together a review come Monday as part of my weekend highlights for all of you!

Squee-Worthy: The Dead Weather

the-dead-weather

I put your heart in a vault
That’s how I get the things I want

If you follow me on Twitter, you will notice that I’ve been gushing a lot about Jack White’s newest project, The Dead Weather. I have to admit, anything Jack White usually belongs very close to my husband’s heart. I almost feel strange claiming a Jack White project as my own but I cannot help it. The second I heard their album, HoreHound, I was completely hooked.

Now Jack White isn’t the only talent involved in the band, in fact, The Dead Weather is considered a “super group” made up of Alison Mosshart of The Kills (another amazing band), Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stoneage and Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs. The product sounds like a bluesy throwback to 70’s rock, which I am naturally drawn to (hello, Led Zeppelin).

As of now, The Dead Weather are not touring many cities and unfortunately the limited tour does not include South Florida, or Florida in general. I hope they draw enough of a crowd and sell enough records to extend their tour because my heart would bust with joy if I were able to see them live. Their tracks have the ability to brighten the worst of days and create an instant karaoke bar in my car. For those of you lucky Rock Band owners, three Dead Weather tracks are now available. Sadly, I own Guitar Hero World Tour but that doesn’t stop me from jamming out in my living room any time I listen to the record.

My favorite tracks?
I Cut Like a Buffalo
Treat Me Like  Your Mother
Bone House
New Pony (Bob Dylan cover)

If you like what you hear (& see!), please pick up the album. You will not be disappointed!

1. My New Macbook!
1. My New Macbook!

Number one this Friday has got to be my brand new, sparkling Macbook! I am sure I have the best hubby in the world – he is always thinking of me and what would make me happy. Boy, was he right on the money! I couldn’t be happier being able to blog from any corner of my house and have lightning speed Internet. I am in love. I can’t wait to further customize it and call it my own :)

Playing Catch-up.

Oof. I’m so sorry guys. I have turned into the worst blogger ever! Things have been busy and life has been getting in the way yet again so the blog has been on the back-burner so to speak. Lovable Friday completely escaped my memory and now I don’t have much of a Weekend wrap-up for you guys either. The good news is that our weekend didn’t consist of much, since we pretty much stayed at home, so there is not much to write about this time around!

What I did want to do was mention the passing of the King of Pop. I know there is much controversy as to what he did behind closed doors and why we are now celebrating a man that may have molested little boys, but the way I see it, death should always be mourned and you cannot deny the contribution to music that this man gave the world throughout the years. I also dare any of you to state that you never sang along or even choreographed a dance or two to one of his songs when you were a kid. I know I, for one, grew up listening to Thriller (because of my older sister) and was pretty much mesmerized by all his music videos. There is one thing that is for sure: the man was a legend, an icon, most probably the biggest celebrity and one of the best entertainers in the world (OK, that is more than one) and whatever crazy ass shit he did in his personal life had no bearing on any of those things. So, rest in peace, Michael. Your music will live in our hearts forever.

Also, RIP Farah Fawcett, Ed McMahon & now Billy Mays. What is going on with the universe? People need to stop dying, ok? My little heart doesn’t like it one bit.
