Happy Hump Day: Mark Hoppus

Blink-182 was one of my favorite bands back in high school. I remember getting extremely upset when they became popular. I just wouldn’t have it – they were my little secret. After my senior year in high school, their popularity continued to snowball and  are now known as one of the most successful American pop punk bands. Blink was led (& bass-ed) by cutie, Mark Hoppus, and although I was totally a Tom girl, I definitely swooned a time or two over Mr. Hoppus. He has those sweet boyish charms (well, aside from the dirty jokes and public farts) that tend to get us girls every time. Since my college days, Blink-182 has broken up, band members have formed side projects (+44 for Mark & drummer, Travis, and Angels & Airwaves for Tom), only for them to announce they were getting back together in 2009. The band is expecting to release their first album together in 8 years sometime this spring/summer. And aside from new music, Mark is also tackling hosting. He has his own show on Fuse, A Different Spin, where he showcases and interviews successful as well as emerging bands alongside co-host comedian, Amy Schumer. You’ve definitely come a long way from All the Small Things, sir.

Happy Hump Day: Jim Sturgess

Although I wasn’t very impressed with Across the Universe (the film, the soundtrack is one of my favorites), I was with cutie Jim Sturgess, who played Jude. He’s British, is in a band and writes poetry. Be still, my beating heart. His breakout role was in 2007’s Beatles tribute, Across the Universe, but he has several films lined up that seem very promising, including One Day, co-starring Anne Hathaway. Aside from his acting career, he also continues to pursue music. He has written music for several films and is the band, Tragic Toys, with his longterm girlfriend (boo, hiss), Mickey O’Brien, who you might know as the keyboardist for the fun electropop group, La Roux. Wanna check out his tunes? Visit his Myspace page!

Jim, feel free to serenade me any day!

1. The Kills

Don’t you love when you feel like you are re-discovering a band for the first time at every listen? That’s how I feel with The Kills. It’s almost like I forget how amazing they are on a quarterly basis and then magically remember. I have no idea why they are so underrated, but I could listen to them all day. You are probably familiar with front lady Alison Mosshart, from The Dead Weather, but there is just something even more special about her already gritty style while fronting The Kills. I love how the band fluctuates between sultry, fun and emotional almost seamlessly. Needless to say, I am beyond excited for their 4th studio album, Blood Pressures, which is slated for release in April! Hey Kills, if you are listening, please swing by South Florida while on tour!

Best of 2010

It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. It’s almost time to say goodbye to 2010 and welcome 2011 with open arms and a fresh outlook. But before we light the sparklers, fill the champagne glasses and partake in some midnight kisses, let’s look back at the best of 2010, through the eyes of Melificent:

Favorite movie:

Inception

Everything was so absolutely right about this movie. I loved the concept, the visuals, the actors. But you can’t expect anything less coming from director, Christopher Nolan.

1. DIY Bold Painting

I have a lot of empty wall space in our new home as we have only been living here for 6 months (can’t believe it’s been such a short amount of time), but we have been keeping our eyes peeled for some nice art pieces to fill that void. However, after seeing the beautiful painting Jen Ramos of MadeByGirl quickly cooked up on her own, I am thinking of investing in a canvas and paintbrushes. How gorgeous and powerful is this artwork? I adore the modern simplicity of it. And what’s better than saying “I did that” while giving home tours to friends and family?

Weekend Highlights

Thanks to Yelp, the hubs and I scored free tickets to see the epic Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the American Airlines Arena on Friday night. Although I wasn’t too familiar with their tuneage, I was ready for an all out rock with your cock out experience complete with pyrotechnics, head-banging and extreme effects. Although that’s exactly what we got, we found ourselves a bit bored mid-way throughout the performance. I think this was due to the drawn out “story line” that took place throughout the show, narrated by an over-enthused man. Unfortunately, these narrations would sometimes outwear their welcome by dragging on for sometimes 10 minutes at a time. However, when they rocked, boy did they ever. I just wish there was more of it.

Trend Bush!

Today, both myself and all the members of the Bush Army, a group of dedicated fans of the band Bush, will be attempting to trend the band on Twitter. I’d love it if some of my great readers could jump on board and help! Everyone knows how much the band means to me and how excellent they are with their fans from all my amazing experiences I have shared on here, so they are definitely well worth it. And all you have to do is pretty simple:

1. Log into your Twitter account or create an account here (it’s free!).

2. Make a post. About anything related to the band and/or music. Make sure to include the following hashtag: #Bush

Easy as 1,2…wait, there’s not even a 3!

Hope you can all participate. And for all of those that find my activity today annoying, feel free to block my tweets or just ignore them. I’ll be back to my regular tweeting schedule tomorrow!

ps; Special thanks to Ace for putting the video above together. Make sure to check out her other Bush-related videos on her youtube channel, ChemicalsBWus!

All of you know I’m a very dedicated Smashing Pumpkins fan and have been since I was 14 years old. That said, I think this new lineup is absolutely wonderful. A lot of people had several comments when it came to the new members, mainly that this no longer made them the Pumpkins. Lies. If you see this band live, I promise you will think differently. They are a powerhouse. There is just something special when these 4 people come together – it is genuine, raw and emotional. Something that harkens back to a Pumpkins I haven’t seen or heard in quite a long time. And I think this new blood has really influenced Corgan’s songwriting (or maybe it’s his new love, Jessica Origliasso, of The Veronicas?) because every track off of Teargarden by Kaleidyscope has been off the charts amazing. It seems like each single is better than the last and their newest off of Volume II: The Solstice Bare, Tom Tom, is no exception.

But I’ll leave it up to all of you. Listen below to the full track (thanks Kerry!) and let me know what you think! I’m personally in love with the lyrics: You & I are bright//I don’t need anyone but you//our lives to me are art.

Oh, Billy Corgan, you will always own my heart.

Don’t forget to pick up your copy of The Solstice Bare here before they run out!

1. Ban.do Sequin Shoe Clips

Could these get any cuter? Ban.do never fails to produce the most fun accessories on the planet. These sequin heart shoe clips instantly make a boring pair of shoes turn into a party on your feet! I love all things glittery and sparkly so these immediately called to me. They have most definitely been added to my Christmas wish list (listening husband?) and should be added to yours too! FYI, there are plenty of other shoe clip styles to choose from on the site if these are not for you (but seriously, how could they not?).

1. Vivienne Westwood Shoes

I’ve decided that Vivienne Westwood is a vile and evil sorceress that is hell bent on destroying my bank account. I also place a little of the blame on Rock ‘n Roll Bride for introducing me to her absolutely adorable collection. The second I set eyes on them I became obsessed with having them, along with the heart shoes. I started scouring Ebay and Google in a frenzy, but unfortunately, they are still out of my price range. I’m hoping someone somewhere will take pity on me and purchase them for me. Gosh, this shoe fetish is just getting out of control.
