Weekend Highlights

Saturday night we celebrated one of my best friend’s birthdays, Elissa. We went to a pretty amazing German restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, Old Heidelberg. We had our own room just to ourselves and enjoyed their wonderful beer selection while the birthday girl was treated to das boot, which is the equivalent of 6 beers! She was also serenaded by a sweet German man armed with an accordion and some serious tunes. Too fun. And the food wasn’t too shabby either! Unfortunately, I don’t think they are used to such big (and rowdy) groups because all the servers looked like they wished death upon us.  Later, we made our way to a local sports bar so the boys could watch the UFC fight (and us girls could gossip).

So a very happy birthday to one of the most wonderful girls I know.
Love you, Elissa cakes!

Comic Con Recap: Day 4

Sunday was definitely bittersweet. I was so exhausted I could barely formulate words, but at the same time, did not want to say goodbye to the maddening nerd boot camp that was Comic Con.

We decided to take it easy and opted to skip the Glee panel (still have nothing but love for you Gleeks!!!) so we could shop on the convention floor and do some off-site activities. We started with breakfast at the delicious Broken Yolk complete with pomegranite mimosas (heaven) and then started making our way to the Dexter Kill Room. We imagined it would be Dexter’s plastic ritual, but were surprised when we had to attempt to find clues at a murder scene involving bloody mirrors, a vintage barber chair and nail torture. Fun? Yes. Creepy? Yes.

After finding some clues, we were given swag (a Dexter tote) and sent on our way. We were really excited to visit Scott Pilgrim vs. Comic Con, but totally bummed when we discovered that it was closed for good. Boo hiss. We decided to make the best out of the situation and ran into the convention center to shop until closing time. I had a great time looking around the exhibit hall, although at times it got a bit claustrophobic and unbearable. We picked up some fun souvenirs and then called it a day. I had a weird feeling in my heart when I left the convention center knowing it would be my last time enjoying the madness that is Comic-Con, as at that time I thought I would not be returning next year. However, thanks to a lot of convincing from friends, I will probably be making my way to Comic Con 2011 if all the chips fall into place. So cross your fingers for that, everyone!

Later that night, we celebrated our last night by keeping tradition and eating at Rockin’ Baja. After taking down some serious plates of food along with sweet & sugary drinks, it was time to hit the hay. We took a nice walk back to our hotel in the cool San Diego weather and bid both our friends and the city farewell. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve had a better group trip.  Thank you for always being so great to us, Comic Con!

Until next time year…

xoxo

This past weekend I celebrated my birthday (again) one last time before saying goodbye to my lovely birthday month, July. I hope you not only raised a glass to my marvelous self, but also to the boy who lived on Saturday as it was Harry Potter’s birthday as well (geeky girl fact).

I’ll be at the Smashing Pumpkins show (!!!)  on Tuesday, so come say hi if you’ll be there too, and then I’ll be on my way to San Diego for Comic-Con! I am beyond excited and especially can’t wait to share my experiences with all upon my return.

Unfortunately, this means that Melificent will be experiencing radio silence until next week. However, if you follow me on Twitter, I will be trying my best to live tweet the entire experience or at least until my cell runs out of battery.  ;)

Ciao!

ps; Go watch Inception!

I’m a fan.

Everyone has something that they are completely and totally passionate about, right? Whether it is a hobby, a sports team or a band, everyone loves something. Well, I love The Smashing Pumpkins. Sure, I like a lot of people and things, but nothing more than the Pumpkins. Since my freshman year of high school, I have been enamored with this band. What is it? At this point, I couldn’t even specify certain reasons, they are just a part of me. I have very strong emotional ties to their music and where it takes me and how it makes me feel. Just the opening riff to a certain song can make me grin from ear to ear, become extremely introspective or a complete and total basket case. All their songs tie together to represent my formative years, to form…me.

And if musical soulmates were to exist, well Billy Corgan, you’d be mine. I still believe that no one can hold a candle to him as a lyricist. And despite his less than stable emotions at times, I believe deep down he is a really beautiful person with an open mind and a big heart. I have seen the Pumpkins 5 times now and each time is better than the last. I am lucky enough to have gotten tickets to their sold out show at Revolution Live, a really small venue for the group, and that show is now a week away.

It may seem like just another show I will add to my arsenal, but words cannot really express how excited I am to see them again. To see them as fired up as the reviews have been reporting. I saw this video from their performance of Hummer at the Viper Room and got really emotional. That is the Pumpkins I remember and grew up with. And I will be experiencing it first hand in a week.

So let the countdown begin:

When I got home from work on Friday, there was only one thing on my mind: relaxation. I had had one hell of a week and definitely deserved some downtime. Thankfully, the weather has been a lot more cooperative as of late so the pool called to me as I stepped in the front door. I debated it, since I had so much work to do, both around the house and for the office (take home work always sucks), but finally the pool won. I quickly slapped on my bikini, grabbed a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon (we are low on beer) and hit the water! It was really relaxing just to float in complete peace and quiet (aside from the passing traffic on the other side of the fence) and say hello to my weekend.

Saturday was my favorite little boy’s 4th birthday: my nephew! He had a great time at his race car themed party at a local school. I have to say I teased my sister quite a bit for buying several bite-sized cars on Ebay to have the kids race with, but they had a complete and total blast. In fact, I had a blast just watching them! And possibly the best part of the day was watching my nephew speed around with a gigantic smile on his face. Happy birthday, little guy!

This week will be especially tough on me as I have to find the time to concentrate amid the excitement – I leave next week to Comic-Con!!! Can I press the fast forward button and then the slow-mo?

SDCC Show & Tell

outfits

Now that I’ve rounded up my birthday girl outfits for this month’s Comic-Con, I decided I’d play a little show and tell with you all! That and people have requested to see them and who am I to deny you lovely people? ;) Now, I realize that it looks like I have some sort of strange antlers growing out of my head, but I assure you it belongs to my cardboard buck.

I’d really appreciate some help from you all with this one. I’m pretty sure this is the winner for my official birthday party (note amazing princess tiara & shoulder details), but I’m concerned that it is a little on the short side, especially since the back is exposed (not pictured). So my question to you all is, should I brave the streets of the Gaslamp District with the itty bitty number or should I pair it with my favorite jean leggings? Advice needed!

I absolutely love this dress! I found it at Loehmann’s this week and haven’t stopped obsessing over it since! It’s the runner up for my birthday dress if I am feeling a little more demure and less sex kitten. It’s so perfectly form fitting without being too suggestive and is made of the most delicious sweatshirt material.

So there you have it! My outfits for our nights on the town in San Diego! Hopefully I’ll look a little cuter the next time I wear them since I’ll actually make an effort to do my hair, accessorize and slap some makeup on ;)

Yep, that’s about the way I feel right now. What I thought was some sort of heat exhaustion over the weekend has turned into this nasty flu-like sickness. High fever, body aches, headache. You get the picture. So I’ll be taking a little break today to try to recuperate. Hopefully I’ll start feeling a little better by tomorrow and be back as usual.

Lovable Friday!

lovablefriday1ae64d4be4bb6ca6799ae1c73dce9614b-e96c3851333a3bef09373cc85240b777

Today there is only one Lovable Friday item and that is because something absolutely magical happened yesterday afternoon. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you are in the know, but for the remaining 2 people who do not, here’s the deal:

Bush is getting back together. Remember I posted about it here? Well, Epicenter Fest, the music festival hosting their first performance together since 2002, has been randomly giving away passes to the show (regular and VIP) through their own Twitter and Facebook accounts. I’ve obviously been entering, hoping to win so I can actually afford to go.

And yesterday afternoon…I won.
I flipping won.

I’m going to see Bush LIVE (in SoCal no less). I am in complete and utter shock. And since it was a pair of tickets, I invited one of my closest friends and Bush partner in crime since 1999, Bonnie. We are absolutely thrilled for the trip – I’ve always wanted to travel to see a band with girlfriends and here I am! I say girlfriends because not only am I going to share this experience with Bonnie, but also with about 19 other hardcore Bush/Gavin Rossdale fans that I have become friends with over the past year on Twitter and Facebook. We refer to ourselves as GRoupies (cute, right?) and are making the trek from all over the U.S. for this show.

All in all, it’s going to be one hell of good time.
Can life get any better? I don’t think so.
I love my life.

In the words of Jason Stackhouse:
Thank you God, Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Allah, Confusion, Buddha, Scientology, Aliens and the lion from Narnia!
