Geek Out: Geeky Fashion Feature

Ever since starting The Fangirl Diaries at the beginning of this year, I have been able to stumble across some pretty amazing new ladies to follow on the blogosphere. I’ve been especially inspired by those blogging about geeky fashion (i.e., The Stylish Geek, The Nerdy Girlie & Geek Piñata). Melificent is part fashion blog, part lifestyle, part whatever-comes-into-my-brain, but I have noticed over time that my geeky side is not showcased enough. For this reason, I want to incorporate it by having at least one geeky style post a month. That is, whether it be an outfit post, a round up of my favorite geeky accessories or home goods, I want this part of me to be seen.

So be on the look out for this month’s geek out. Did I just make up a new feature? Yessum.

Beachy Necessities

Think of this as a “what’s in your bag” beach edition. For us Miami natives, beach season is year round (go ahead, hate away), but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy it that much more in the summer. The summer months mean you play with your work/school schedule enough to give yourself the time to hit up South Beach or The Florida Keys more than usual. I subscribe to this way of thinking.

Being raised with my toes in the sand and always having an extra bathing suit in my trunk, I know what should and should not be in your beach bag. And I’m here to share the wealth with you today. So dust off that tote, and get a few sit ups in because we are headed to the coast, lovely readers!

1. Maxi dress; a maxi is the perfect go-to for beach days. It’s light, comfortable & doesn’t take up any room when packing. Plus, they usually look great layered over an adorable bikini. This one from Conversation Pieces just screams sunshine & fruity drinks (you know, the ones with umbrellas in them).
2. Bright sunnies; to me, sunglasses should make a statement, and what better way than with a bold color? Make sure they don’t clash though – these tangerine shades work great against my maxi’s tropical pattern (similar).
3. Fedora; even though you will be applying plenty of sunscreen, any extra (fashionable) coverage from the sun is always welcome. A hat is the perfect way to do so! I absolutely love this multi-colored fedora because it goes with almost everything in my closet (no longer available, but try an equally versatile black one)!
4. Fun mini wallet; save space in your bag for big, bulky beach towels by shrinking all necessities, including your wallet! It’s not like you are going to need everything in your every day wallet while laying out and drinking piña coladas, so keep it small and basic. I am still squee-ing over this adorable Boston Terrier wallet from Target.
5. Neon sandals; it’s Miami! You gotta inject some sort of neon into your wardrobe. For those of you that may be a little neon-shy, a pair of fluorescent-hued sandals may scratch the itch in a more subdued way (similar).
6. Sunscreen; as mentioned before, gotta take care of that skin! Although tans are nice, cancer is not.
7. Travel-sized perfume; I don’t know where I’d be without my Travalo. Probably stinking up the entire car after a long day in the sun, that’s where.
8. Instax film; although I recommend sitting back and enjoying what nature has to offer at the beach (after some envy-inducing selfies naturally), sometimes it’s fun to take some souvenirs home – and I’m not talking seashells. Ocean spray and sunshine always make for the perfect Polaroid backdrop, so take advantage and bring along your favorite camera and some film (if needed). Or you can use your phone & mosey on over to the Polaroid Fotobar to convert technological savvy into vintage memories.
9. Perfectly-sized tote; it’s the beach. Pack light! A medium sized bag is all you’ll need to tote these essentials – anything bigger will just cramp your style (and your shoulder)!

Her Universe’s New Star Wars Merchandise

Like every good geeky girl, I am headed to Star Wars Weekend in Disneyworld next month. I am extremely excited because I’ve never been during the festivities, so I am looking forward to some good ‘ol fashion geekin’ out. However, now I have a whole other reason to get pumped up: Her Universe will be unveiling some new merchandise at the parks! You’ll be able to pick up all the new items at a special boutique store inside Darth’s Mall. Here are some of my favorite pieces that I have already categorized as MUST BUYS:

You can see the rest of the collection here, which includes some beautiful R2-D2 jewelry designed at The Sparkle Factory.

May the 4th still be with you (& also with your wallet).

What I Wore: Pineapples & Tattoos

Yep, officially summer time! We spent the weekend in the pool, running errands in the sun and recording our second podcast (don’t forget to check out The Fangirl Diaries). It’s time to whip out the shorts and….pineapples? Yep, it’s one of the summer’s biggest pattern trends, and I absolutely love it. It helps that it fits in perfectly with the Miami vibe! One of our Sunday errands was swinging by Ocho Placas, our favorite tattoo shop, to meet with the lovely Ms. Pooka to discuss our next tattoos. Details are under wraps right now, but I’ll make sure to share once we are newly inked in July! Hint: fandom!

What I Wore: Easter Sunday

My godson (& nephew) was out of town for Easter, so we didn’t have much to do. We are not overly religious people (both raised cafeteria Catholic), so the holiday surrounds this little guy and watching him pop open eggs that usually have some sort of small die cast car in them. This year is a little different – I packed his eggs full of Pokemon cards instead to give him at a later date. ;)

As a substitution, we had my mom over for wine and a hangout sesh. We were initially going to watch Catching Fire (my mom is a recent Hunger Games addict), but just never got around to it. We had way too much catching up to do! It was nice and relaxing, as well as reassuring. No matter how old you are, it always feels nice to have your mom hold your hand and tell you things will be and are better. Am I right?

What I Wore: Breezy & Balmy

Sorry to the rest of you, but in Miami, it is already summer time. We spent a great day with friends visiting places we had never been: Funky Buddha Brewery and Rock n Roll Ribs (omgz I was able to eat something). Despite a crazy storm very early morning, we had a GORGEOUS day to contend with, so I pulled together my most perfect summer outfit. Both these pieces are so light and breezy, it barely feels like you have anything on at all. Paired with my absolute favorite unicorn clutch (totally adorable, but not exactly functional – itty bitty space that barely holds a phone), I think I found my go-to outfit for the months to come.

What I Wore: Broken Shaker

The hubs and I had been dying to try out what is being hailed as the best bar in Miami for quite a long time (hello, James Beard award nomination). It’s so well known that when we traveled to Orlando (twice), both times bartenders asked us if we had been. It was kind of embarrassing to say we hadn’t. So we took the plunge this past weekend, and despite the strange and fickle weather, we had a great time at the Broken Shaker.

What I wore was kind of perfect for the laid back, relaxed vibe of the place. The Broken Shaker is located on the patio of Freehand Miami Hostel, and it is kind of absolutely adorable. It didn’t have a very Miami vibe, which is what I loved about it the most. It reminded me of somewhere between L.A. and Spain (yeah, I know…weird), and definitely made me want to plan a staycation (Private King Suite please) just so I can relax by the pool and take in the bar every.single.day. Needless to say, we will be back. And frequently.

If My Blog Was An Outfit

I love meeting new geeky lady friends via the Twitterverse. Thanks to Her Universe and their fabulous #flauntyourworld hashtag, Megan and I started our bloggy-ship? Blogship? Either way! She’s an adorable geek girl hailing from Comic Con’s stomping grounds, San Diego, and she has a great blog over at The Nerdy Girlie. She also loves tea, the UK and Doctor Who. Hello new bestie! While looking through her site, I loved the If My Blog Was An Outfit post, and had to do my own!

Necklace | Tank | Clutch | Lipstick | Nail Polish | Flats | Skirt

I love wearing clothes that reference my fandoms, but I like them to be a little discrete and still fashionable (OK, so this tank isn’t super discrete…). I also love me some bright clothing, neon preferably. Most of the time, I am in sweet little skirts, preferably paired with flats. If they are glittered: perfection.

I also love me some whimsy, so a unicorn clutch would round out this outfit perfectly. I equally stay faithful to my rock roots, so I like to add a little edge with fun and spikey accessories. My nail polish obsession only continues to grow – glitter-filled Deborah Lippmann shades are my favorite because they are just so happy and pretty, while M.A.C. is always my go-to for lipstick. Candy Yum Yum is my new favorite, especially for the upcoming Miami summer.

Finally, my iPad! It’s always with me either for work or for play – it’s where I read all my books. I spend many a late night cuddled in bed with the hubs and the newest YA series. Right now? Vampire Academy! In a nut shell: glitter, geekdom, neons, unicorns, and nail polish. Yep, pretty Melificent.

What I Wore: Miami Chic(k)

The right outfit can really change your day, huh? Everyone has those days, weeks, months (?) where the clouds outweigh the rainbows, but I promise if you slap on just that right something, a special thing will happen. This was it for me last weekend. The most perfectly graphic wide-legged pants, a summery crop top and a great hairstyle was just enough to make me feel like a new woman. I walked a little taller, smiled a little wider and generally had a skip in my step. Don’t underestimate what something as seemingly silly as clothes can do for your mental health. The simple things. It’s all about them. That’s what I’m realizing more and more every day.

Forever 21 Road to Festival Event

This past Saturday, Annie Vazquez of TheFashionPoet.com paired up with Forever 21 for a fun event on Lincoln Road whose goal was to make sure its shoppers were festival ready. For those of you not in the know, spring and summer months don’t just mean the beach, bikinis and mai tai’s – they are also prime time for music festivals (get prepared for this year’s best here). What used to just be considered a sweaty, expensive and generally uncomfortable avenue to see your favorite bands has turned into a fashion mecca. And Forever 21 wants you accordingly equipped with festival-friendly crop tops, wide-brimmed fedoras, and flowing maxi dresses. And who was I to deny them?

Aside from the 21% off any single item, the store also had a complimentary hair bar where I made myself comfortable and only several minutes (?!?) later had a slammin’ braid crown that had me dreaming about dancing around the grassy knolls of Coachella. I also got to meet some other lovely local bloggers and, of course, SHOP. With Annie’s guidance listed all throughout the store, I was able to put together what I deemed a melificent festival outfit with some new and some old pieces. OK, so I only changed my pants. But c’mon. Give me some bravery points. Those are not a pair of pants I would have usually gravitated towards and look! I loved them.

With the always lovely Annie of The Fashion Poet

Overall, the event was a blast! Everywhere I went afterwards, I was greeted with some sort of compliment about my hair and I think the great pieces I took home with me are versatile, while still being fun and whimsical. AND! I actually was able to attend an event, guys. My full-time job usually prevents me from being an active member in the Miami blogger scene, so it’s nice when they land on a weekend and I can finally mingle! Until the next…

Look out for the outfit post tomorrow!

**special thanks to my buddy, Tammy, for snapping these pics of me!
