What I Wore: Cosplay

This past weekend was Florida Supercon, which is Miami’s comic book convention. This year, it moved over to the Miami Beach Convention Center, so I was hopeful it would be an even better show. It definitely was!  Aside from all the extra space, we had more quality vendors and even more people cosplaying than ever before! I had some issues with the show’s organization, but for the most part, I’d say it was a success!

This also marked the first time I would be cosplaying, so I have to admit that I was a bit nervous. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw all our fun antics and shots of my costumes. On Saturday, I was Amy Pond to my husband’s 11th Doctor, and although I had so much fun (someone asked me in a 100% concerned voice where Rory was), I think the winner of my cosplay weekend was Hipster Ariel. I had a lot of questions as to where I bought the pieces, so I figure I would break them all down for you here on the blog. Where else!

Why Conventions?

With Florida Supercon quickly approaching this week, I thought I’d give my opinion of comic con’s and why I enjoy attending them. Oftentimes people ask me why I go or what I find so fun about them. For those of us submerged in the geeky culture, there is no question, but for others that are unaware, I thought I would shed some light.

The atmosphere at most comic book conventions is very accepting and loving. For many of us geeks, expressing ourselves fully is not always an option. Either we do not know people with similar interests or in my case, our busy schedules get in the way of being a full-time fangirl/boy. At conventions, we are free to be ourselves and embrace full blown geekery 24/7. It’s truly a thing of beauty. I have yet to meet someone at a convention that judged others or was not 100% smiles. There is full freedom of expression, and honestly, there are very few places or events that can say the same. It’s almost like being at a huge geeky frat party (sans high-levels of douche).

For those that are a little less apt to approach others, I feel like a convention opens doors to better socialization. You are less likely to feel intimidated to compliment someone when you are both wearing Doctor Who shirts, right? I mean, right off the bat, you know someone shares a similar interest, which is always the most difficult aspect to pinpoint when chatting up a stranger. With the bigger conventions, you are also able to meet some of your favorite vendors and artists. This is personally one of the highlights of my con experiences! You can read about all the amazing people I met at MegaCon here.

Finally, you get to shop till you drop! Conventions are prime real estate for geeky memorabilia you can’t find elsewhere most of the time. Depending on the size and popularity of the convention, you can find some pretty amazing vendors, like my personal favorite, We Love Fine! Since it is a special event, they also tend to throw in either discount for current purchases or future ones, or have exclusive items that you will only be able to find at that particular convention. Definitely something to get excited about!

So there you have it: some of the reasons I love convention season!
If you feel the same, I hope to see you this weekend! I’ll be cosplaying for the first time, so make sure to say hi if you see me!

Geek Chic: Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Batman!

This past weekend, The Fangirl Diaries recorded our 3rd podcast and I’m pretty sure you can tell what our main subject matter was! We had a blast, as always, and despite some technical difficulties were able to deliver another fun discussion about all things geeky in pop culture. I’m kind of obsessed at the moment with pairing a fandom tee and a high waisted skirt. I just think it is so flattering to all body types. This little swingy skirt from Nordstrom Rack does just that perfectly. It’s soft and comfy, which makes it a fabulous go-to when wanting to dress up your geeky look. I’m sure it won’t be the first time you see it on the blog!

Geek Chic: The Dark Side

Come to the dark side, we have cookies.

On the heels of my post about mixed feelings towards leggings, I go ahead and make myself look like a somewhat hypocrite. Yep, here I am in leggings. But honestly, paired with this perfectly soft tunic tee and sneakers, I couldn’t have been more comfortable. In fact, I think I may have found my SDCC staple outfit, especially after a long night of drinking and dancing the night away. Leggings, I was wrong about you.

The Fangirl Diaries: SDCC Outfits

So for those of you still not following my little side project, The Fangirl DiariesDO EET! I’d like to think that our content is improving as we go and I’m really proud of where it is heading. There are a lot of amazing things in my geeky future, and I can’t wait to share them with you, but for now, check out our newest video with the absolutely adorable Netty of The Fashionable ESQ. She was sweet enough to style several outfits for me for upcoming San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), and we had such a fun time together.

Fandom Leggings

Leggings. I immediately think of Daria’s obnoxious sister, Quinn.
You just heard her voice in your head, didn’t you?

I had been on the fence about leggings for quite some time. Probably because I see people mistaking them for PANTS. Pants they are not, my friends. They are meant to be worn with an over-sized tunic top or any top that at least covers your crotch and the majority of your backside. If not, I (and everyone else) sees more than they signed up for at any given moment (especially when you bend over – yikes).

With that said, when worn appropriately, I have grown to love them. They are comfy and easy to wear, plus the fandom world has taken to creating all sorts of character and story driven leggings. This means more room in your luggage when packing for conventions, as you can just roll them up into a tiny little log of goodness. However, their price tag has always made me think twice. They usually run between $60-100 and I just couldn’t justify paying that for a pair of leggings I would just wear to specialty events.

But low and behold! I have discovered this fantastic Etsy shop that I have decided to share with all of you, velvetcoc. Unfortunate name aside, they sell amazing fandom leggings for $18 and are currently holding a 2-4-1 sale!!! The seller is located in China, so you will have to wait for your goodies with bated breath, but honestly, it only took 2 weeks for my pair to arrive. Not too shabby! Want to know what I’m picking up next? See my favorites below:

I’m crossing all body parts that she’ll add Doctor Who inspired leggings next!

Geek Out: Maleficent

As you can all imagine, I was pretty stoked for the premiere of Disney’s Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie. I was there opening night and wanted to make sure I dressed the part. Although the horns pictured were the bestie’s, I think I paid tribute to my favorite Disney villain while still staying geek chic. Unfortunately, Disney did not. I was disappointed in the way they portrayed Maleficent, whom to me is a very powerful female character. However, I’ll stop there. Our full review is posted on The Fangirl Diaries Youtube channel so make sure to check it out!

Geeky Must-Haves

Ever since submerging myself much deeper in the geeky world by starting The Fangirl Diaries, I have been introduced to a whole new world of temptations. I am beside myself with excitement. My wallet? Yeah, not so much. It doesn’t help that I have three very geeky events coming up: Star Wars Weekend, Florida SuperCon & SDCC. All give me ample “reasons” to stock up on everything geek chic. These are my current wants needs:

The Doctor Brooch ($12); Universe Crack Necklace ($55); Moon Crisis mini ($30); Mickey Ears Heart Brooch ($5.25); Tardis Crop Top (no longer available b/c I bought it – oops!)

How do the rest of you geeky ladies control the fandom trigger finger?

Loot Crate Unboxing: May 2014 ADVENTURE

So I may be a little behind the times here, but I just discovered the greatness that is Loot Crate! It is a monthly subscription service, much like BirchBox or Julep, but just targeted at the geeky community. Score, right?? The box comes stocked with a bunch of goodies, ranging from figures to key chains to tees all corresponding to that month’s theme! This month’s theme is ADVENTURE and it was my first Loot Crate experience.

Geek Out: Make Mine Marvel

Welcome to the blog’s newest feature, Geek Out! I put together many a nerdy outfit on a daily basis, so I figured, why not spotlight it on the blog! Plus, it ties in perfectly with my newest misadventure, The Fangirl Diaries. I think you can incorporate fandom/geekery into any outfit and make it as outrageous or subtle as you want. In this case, I decided with a little more subtle. I absolutely love all the fun nerdy crop tops that are popping up because it gives you the opportunity to still look trendy and sexy, while still expressing your love for certain characters. This Marvel tank is a perfect example! Paired with a glitter mini (who says glitter can’t be a neutral??) and some brightly colored wedges, you could go out for a night of dancing, a romantic dinner or to an art opening. Multipurpose!
