Weekend Highlights

My excitement reached max capacity last week when I discovered that their would be a huge food truck rally basically in my backyard. Although these kind of events happen around South Florida often, they never make their way to my neck of the woods, West Kendall. Much less, of this magnitude. Twenty trucks were advertised to attend – twenty. I didn’t even know we had that many trucks! Needless to say, I spread the word like wildfire on both Twitter and Facebook and began to brainstorm about which trucks would be in attendance.

When I arrived at the location (12975 SW 137 Avenue), I could not believe my eyes. There were cars parked for what seemed like miles and an impressive crowd meandering around a serious group of gourmet food trucks. I instantly felt like a little kid in a candy store. I didn’t know which truck to visit first and was just overwhelmed with goodness. I decided my best plan of attack was to choose the trucks I had not yet tried at previous events. My first stop was Cheese Me. I had their mac ‘n cheese pancakes. Sure, that may seem gross to some, but trust me, they were all sorts of heavenly. Of course, it was the worst option for my sensitive and cranky stomach, but I knew deep down inside that it was worth it. Worth every cheesy bite of awesome.

My second stop was Jefe’s. I ordered the Tacos Carnitas, which really rivaled those pancakes. They were seasoned perfectly and the pork made my carnivorous heart sing. A friend of mine ordered the Double Cheezer burger and it looked all sorts of awesome as well. In fact, I believe her only complaint was that she was going to have a hard time trying to fit in her mouth (that’s what she said – literally). I then made my way to the All Points Eatery truck. After ordering and eating their Korean BBQ taco, I have no idea why there was no line at this one! It was the best thing I ate that night, hands down. Both sweet and savory – I can’t recommend this one enough.

We finished the night in the most gargantuan line to try some treats at Sugar Rush, the brand new truck by Sweetness Bakeshop. I have to be completely honest here. I do not like Sweetness. At all. Their cupcakes are crap. Is that too harsh? Maybe I wouldn’t be as harsh if their employees were kind and helpful, but they have always been pretty nasty every time I have gone in to their shop, and to top it off, their cupcakes all taste the same. I don’t even know why I bothered giving the truck any of my time, but I really had a hankering for a milkshake, and I figured I’d give them a chance. I mean, they could make some really killer ones for all I knew. After waiting for what seemed like an hour (it was probably close), we get to the front of the line and they had run out of milkshakes. Gone. Finito. I wanted to punch that guy’s face in. Best part? They didn’t even offer me anything else for my hellacious wait. He just gave me a blank stare and a simple “Sorry.” That’s what I get for continuing to give them chances. That’ll definitely be my last!

However, otherwise the event was spectacular. There are obviously a lot more trucks that I didn’t try, so I am beyond thrilled that they have announced that the event will be back this coming Friday (1/14/10)! I can’t wait to visit again and hope some of you can join me. And this time, I’ll definitely remember to snap some pics!

Seriously that burger was massive, but oh so very good! I can’t wait to go back to try the rest of the trucks. And now I’m really glad we didn’t get into the monster line at Sweetness’ truck.

Mel, All Points Eatery was yummy. I didn’t get to try the cupcakes, the line was uber long. I guess I can stop being antsy now that i hear they weren’t spectacular. That’s a shame, i love cupcakes :(
