What I Wore: I’m On A Boat!

Remember these pretty great shorts? Well, here’s my second way to style them! Being that my first Miami Swim Week event was atop a yacht, I figured I should dress the part! I picked a vibrant top that would complement the nautical basic. Pair it with some bright and fun accessories, like my shades and earrings, and you have the perfect summer brunch outfit. Something that really makes this outfit pop? The open back cutouts (& my awesome, yet peeling, tattoo)!

Special thanks to Netty of The Fashionable ESQ for taking these shots for me!

Miami Swim Week: Ford Beauty Suite & Inglot

This week is the always hectic, but always fun Miami Swim Week! This week’s events started for me yesterday at the Ford Beauty Suite and Inglot’s Beauty Lounge. Although I’m a very girly girl, I don’t pamper myself often, so it was super nice to be able to kick back and get a little pretty for a few hours. Granted, Miami tried to throw a wrench in that equation with our daily rainstorms, but god dammit, we were not having it! The party started onboard an amazing yacht in Miami Beach with some pretty outrageous vendors.

I loved the Intermix pop up shop, with some gorgeous pieces from such designers as Moschino, and those great striped sunglasses from Illesteve Leonard. Totally in love.

Also, check out this neck candy. So much beauty, so little time, folks.

I’m all for Voga Prosecco by the way, although not surprised after loving their Pinot Grigio for a couple of years now.

Geek Chic: Day of the Doctor

As you all know, I got a Doctor Who tattoo this past weekend (read about why here). I know it may have been a little cheesy, but I thought I should go at least moderately themed out, right? I decided to take the iconic Tardis blue and incorporate it into my entire outfit. I made sure the pieces I chose were lightweight and comfortable, since I was going to be sitting down in a very tense position for hours, most probably while sweating profusely (hi, anxiety). I added the true touch of geek with a Tardis trucker-style hat, which I plan on wearing every day of my life thankyouverymuch.

For the rest of this week, I plan on showcasing all the different ways you can pair these great pair of shorts from Conversation Pieces. I found them to be so versatile – they can work for so many occasions! Obviously, this first look is how to rock them casually.

Geek Out: Home Is Where The Geek Is

When the hubs and I first moved out and got our own place, we thought we had to decorate it “like adults do.” This resulted in a home that looked nice, but didn’t go with our personalities at all. By the time we bought our first home, we knew that had to change. Just because we were adults and now owned a proper home, did not mean that we had to make it look a certain way. Nothing makes a house a home more than looking around and saying, “yep, this is my space.” For that reason, we started incorporating more fun elements that reflected our interests and personal style. Now people walk in and can’t say our house looks anything but us.

I love that Brad-Pitt is chilling in both shots!

Obviously, our home decor has a strong geeky theme. We buy most of our art at conventions, and enjoy figures just as much as any other nerd. What was important to us was to showcase this in a very subtle, modern and classy way. Despite being in our home for 4 years now, we still are working on it every day to make it our perfect little cave, but I’m happy to say that I love the progress we’ve made! I especially am a fan of our living room and bedroom. Wanna see?

One art wall where you can display all your fandoms in a simple, yet strategic way is great for a living room space.
I still can’t get over how amazing our Tara Mcpherson LOST piece is.

Incorporating geek is all about the little touches in a home, like our Harry Potter Pop-Up Coffee Table Book.

I always laugh at this photo op we have up in our bedroom of us with John Barrowman because it looks like we are one, big, happy family (which we could be, of course).

The little touches continue in our bedroom. My nightstand houses a Fiona figure and is graced by the beautiful Rose Tyler, as drawn by Pooka Machine of Ocho Placas Tattoo.

These are some of our new pieces that are going up this week throughout the house. I can’t sing enough praises about Artist Alley’s at conventions. They are my absolute favorite part about attending! The prints above are from Upside Down Grin & IdeaStorm Media

What I Wore: Cruel Summer

This summer has been a particularly cruel one in South Florida. We have been getting nasty storms nearly every day, which have been impeding on our sunshine state activities. In between thunderstorms, the humidity has been off the charts and our mosquitoes clearly have a ruthless agenda against all mankind. In a nutshell: stay indoors.

Thankfully this past weekend gave us some sort of respite, and I was actually able to enjoy my pool for the first time this summer (sacrilegious). I was also able to take these photos without fearing an impeding storm, but it was still quite steamy. To fight the unbearable heat, sometimes you just gotta go basic. I can already tell this tee is going to be a summer staple. It’s light, so incredibly soft and in an amazing Miami color. It also gives you the ability to rock the half-tuck, which is my new favorite. It really highlights your silhouette while still remaining casual. Win/win? Yes.

Embrace Your Geekness Day!

The most epic holiday you did not know about, Embrace Your Geekness Day, was celebrated on Sunday, July 13th. I did not find out about it until a couple of weeks ago, so it made me smile to know that I just happened to have scheduled my Doctor Who tattoo for that very day (kismet).

I will have a feature up in honor of the holiday over on The Fangirl Diaries, but I really wanted to touch on it here on the blog. Reason being, a lot of people may not understand why those deeply involved in a fandom may want it tattooed. It may seem frivolous, childish or even stupid, for some. However, I wanted to shed some light on the topic by sharing my own personal reason. Sure, some people (myself included at times) may just get a fandom tattoo because they want to (respect my authoritay), but sometimes, it goes deeper than that.

Come Join Me At Escape Miami Lounge

Image by; Alexander Tamargo of Alta Images

I am so flattered to be part of this year’s Escape Miami Lounge during Miami Swim Week. This year the event will be held at The National Hotel in Miami Beach and will be hosted by the hotel, Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Annie Vazquez of The Fashion Poet on Saturday, July 19th from 12-5pm. The fashion and beauty retreat returns with a 3PM poolside fashion show, complimentary cocktails and bites, and spa and beauty treatments, such as haircuts and beard trims for the guys and mini manicures and beach waves for the gals. Attendees can sign up for tattoo application, get sketched by a fashion illustrator (hi Gissi!) or take a DIY flower crown making class. There’s also plenty of games and even a gentlemen’s corner added this year where the guys can hang out, have a brew and play a game of poker or dominos while the ladies can shop the latest summer trends off the runway from various local and national pop-up shops.

So much fun playing model for a day!

You can also find my mug among 44 other amazing Miami fashion bloggers in a photo exhibit called “Our Summer Stories” photographed by Alexander Tamargo. I’d absolutely love not only your support, but your company! The event has always been super fun and I think this year will be even better! It is 100% free, but you have to RSVP and fast, as the event usually sells out quickly. You can RSVP at escapemiami2.eventbrite.com.

Gold Bubble Clothing’s New Sherlock Collection

I am absolutely in love with Gold Bubble and their products, and their new Sherlock collection just tipped me over the edge. How amazing is this great set of clothing???? I especially like their A-line dresses in patterns from the show that every die-hard Sherlocked fan will recognize. They are girly and flatter every figure, which makes them the perfect option for not only cons, but also more formal events like showers and even weddings (just remember not to play that nasty murder game).

What are my must-haves from the collection?
Check them out here!

Oh! And if you use the promo code BAKERST, you get 15% off your purchase!

What I Wore: Cosplay

This past weekend was Florida Supercon, which is Miami’s comic book convention. This year, it moved over to the Miami Beach Convention Center, so I was hopeful it would be an even better show. It definitely was!  Aside from all the extra space, we had more quality vendors and even more people cosplaying than ever before! I had some issues with the show’s organization, but for the most part, I’d say it was a success!

This also marked the first time I would be cosplaying, so I have to admit that I was a bit nervous. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw all our fun antics and shots of my costumes. On Saturday, I was Amy Pond to my husband’s 11th Doctor, and although I had so much fun (someone asked me in a 100% concerned voice where Rory was), I think the winner of my cosplay weekend was Hipster Ariel. I had a lot of questions as to where I bought the pieces, so I figure I would break them all down for you here on the blog. Where else!

Why Conventions?

With Florida Supercon quickly approaching this week, I thought I’d give my opinion of comic con’s and why I enjoy attending them. Oftentimes people ask me why I go or what I find so fun about them. For those of us submerged in the geeky culture, there is no question, but for others that are unaware, I thought I would shed some light.

The atmosphere at most comic book conventions is very accepting and loving. For many of us geeks, expressing ourselves fully is not always an option. Either we do not know people with similar interests or in my case, our busy schedules get in the way of being a full-time fangirl/boy. At conventions, we are free to be ourselves and embrace full blown geekery 24/7. It’s truly a thing of beauty. I have yet to meet someone at a convention that judged others or was not 100% smiles. There is full freedom of expression, and honestly, there are very few places or events that can say the same. It’s almost like being at a huge geeky frat party (sans high-levels of douche).

For those that are a little less apt to approach others, I feel like a convention opens doors to better socialization. You are less likely to feel intimidated to compliment someone when you are both wearing Doctor Who shirts, right? I mean, right off the bat, you know someone shares a similar interest, which is always the most difficult aspect to pinpoint when chatting up a stranger. With the bigger conventions, you are also able to meet some of your favorite vendors and artists. This is personally one of the highlights of my con experiences! You can read about all the amazing people I met at MegaCon here.

Finally, you get to shop till you drop! Conventions are prime real estate for geeky memorabilia you can’t find elsewhere most of the time. Depending on the size and popularity of the convention, you can find some pretty amazing vendors, like my personal favorite, We Love Fine! Since it is a special event, they also tend to throw in either discount for current purchases or future ones, or have exclusive items that you will only be able to find at that particular convention. Definitely something to get excited about!

So there you have it: some of the reasons I love convention season!
If you feel the same, I hope to see you this weekend! I’ll be cosplaying for the first time, so make sure to say hi if you see me!
