Tamiami Truckers Food Court

Some of Miami’s best food trucks decided to pay West Kendall a visit once more this past Friday as part of the now weekly, Tamiami Trucks Food Court. As you all know, I attended the event last week, but I forgot to bring my trusty camera (blasphemy). This time, I made sure it was packed in my purse before heading out the door so I could share the yums with all of you out there in the blogosphere.

There weren’t quite as many trucks this time around, but felt like there were double the attendees! I was happy to see that friends had carpooled from Broward in order to attend the event, as our poor little West Kendall hood usually doesn’t get the attention it really should (I happen to love my neighborhood). Due to this, the lines were pretty epic. It wasn’t out of the realm of possibilities to have to wait an hour plus to get a burger, but in my case, it was well worth it.

My first stop was Dos Lokos. My hubs had tried them last week and could not stop raving for days. The fact that their Super Loko burger boasted a fried egg (amongst other goodies) sealed the deal. This burger was going in my belly. And that was a fact. After quite the hellacious line (I guess news travels fast), I finally got my dirty paws on my (altered) Super Loko. It was all sorts of wonderful. The multiple patties, the crumbled chips, that delicious fried egg. It was heaven. I’m currently stalking them on Twitter because I doubt I’ll have the willpower to wait for these weekly events. I bow down to you, Dos Lokos!

1. Chocolate Spoons

I love experimenting with desserts. They are usually a lot less difficult to make than main entrees and are just way more fun. Wouldn’t you agree? Definitely the case when it comes to these too-cute chocolate party spoons. They really make an impression with their bright colors and decorative accents, but seem so easy to make! I’m going to have a go at them for our Valentine’s Day celebration (I’m planning the whole thing this year – pressure!), and will definitely report back with a play-by-play. Until then, check out the Delicious Delicious Delicious blog’s short and sweet tutorial!

Weekend Highlights

Credit: Facebook

My excitement reached max capacity last week when I discovered that their would be a huge food truck rally basically in my backyard. Although these kind of events happen around South Florida often, they never make their way to my neck of the woods, West Kendall. Much less, of this magnitude. Twenty trucks were advertised to attend – twenty. I didn’t even know we had that many trucks! Needless to say, I spread the word like wildfire on both Twitter and Facebook and began to brainstorm about which trucks would be in attendance.

When I arrived at the location (12975 SW 137 Avenue), I could not believe my eyes. There were cars parked for what seemed like miles and an impressive crowd meandering around a serious group of gourmet food trucks. I instantly felt like a little kid in a candy store. I didn’t know which truck to visit first and was just overwhelmed with goodness. I decided my best plan of attack was to choose the trucks I had not yet tried at previous events. My first stop was Cheese Me. I had their mac ‘n cheese pancakes. Sure, that may seem gross to some, but trust me, they were all sorts of heavenly. Of course, it was the worst option for my sensitive and cranky stomach, but I knew deep down inside that it was worth it. Worth every cheesy bite of awesome.

Culinary Adventures

In an attempt to keep myself motivated in the kitchen, I decided to document what I’ve been concocting here with you all. Hope this plan works out and that I continue to feel as excited about learning how to cook, even if it may seem basic to all of you out there in the blogosphere. I literally started only being able to cook rice…in a rice cooker. My feelings towards being in the kitchen and putting together meals has already changed drastically in only a couple of weeks. I find myself actually having a good time, although, in turn I also have noticed that I can get pretty down on myself when I make mistakes. I have to remind myself that mistakes are bound to happen, especially when I’m still at such a rookie level, but my fear of failure gets the best of me at times.

Last week, I found a recipe for penne with corn and brown butter. It seemed simple enough for a beginner like me to try to tackle so I excitedly went to the grocery store to pick up any ingredients I didn’t have at home. One big gripe I have had so far? There always seems to be one especially annoying ingredient that I cannot find at the grocery store. It is beyond irritating. This time? Oregano leaves. I decided to leave them out of the recipe, which ended up being a bad decision. It was a little bland, but I was proud of myself for browning the butter all by myself. Of course, I was obsessively stirring the butter in complete and utter fright, fearing that I would manage to burn my entire kitchen down, but all was good. I may have been a little too safe, as the hubs told me I could have left it in the pan longer, giving it an even nut-ier taste. However, good news was that I cooked the corn perfectly and no one was poisoned! I paired it with a ready-made organic butternut squash soup and was happy.

(Merry) Lovable Friday!

Being that today is Christmas Eve (or Noche Buena for all my Latin readers), I figured I would keep with the holiday theme and show you some of my most favorite festive items I’ve stumbled on this week!

1. Candy Cane Cookies

Ah, baking. Relaxing (sometimes) and therapeutic (sometimes). While asking you all for your favorite holiday recipes last week as part of the Be My Clementine giveaway, my eyes landed on the seemingly delicious Candy Cane Cookies, submitted by my good friend, Camero (who has a wonderful food blog you should all check out). I decided these were the ones I was going to tackle. Despite some hang-up’s (didn’t form them into candy canes), they were a huge success. In fact, my boss came to my office to specifically ask me if there were any more left several days later (there definitely were not). I especially love how festive they look and the contrast created by the peppermint flavor.

Weekend Highlights

I finally decided to hit up the local farmer’s market after making that post last week complaining about our lack of them in the area. The hubs and I woke up early and made our way to Pinecrest Gardens for their weekly festivities ready to find some really great stuff. I did find really great stuff, just not what I expected.

There were a lot of organic food items. I was expecting more produce. There were plants and trees. I was expecting more fresh flowers. You get it. However, now we know that we can wake up hungry and with cash in hand ready to chow down on some good breakfast or lunch items. Unfortunately, this time around we left empty handed.

The rest of our weekend was pretty low key. We had a good time with each other, enjoying our alone time (we don’t get a lot lately) eating, drinking, exploring and cuddling. It’ll probably be the last time until the new year that we have no set plans so I really tried to revel in it. Lots of events and fun (and sometimes stress) coming soon to a blog near you! ;)

Have a great week, everyone!

Lovable Friday: Halloween 2010 Edition

Pumpkin Faces
1. Pumpkin Faces

Nothing says Halloween like arts and crafts. And when I say arts and crafts, I mean the queen of them herself, Martha Stewart. Sure she’s creepy, a low-talker, and yes, she may even look like she’s ready to snap on a sweet gingerbread man at any moment. But she certainly knows how to host a party. These pumpkin faces are just adorable, and are easy to do for any Halloween occasion. All you need is a jar, candy to fill the jar, a pumpkin and soft candy to mold however you please for the silly/scary faces.

1. Rolling Stone True Blood Cover

It’s not rare to see hotties on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, but that didn’t stop me from literally gasping out loud when this month’s cover was released. Wowza! You have to give it up to True Blood, they know what their viewers want to see – or rather, what they don’t want to see: namely, clothes. Jennifer Aniston, eat your heart out!

Weekend Highlights

Like I expressed last week, I could hardly contain myself with excitement for the release of Scott Pilgrim. The hubs and I planned a date night on Friday consisting of dinner at Yellow Submarine (the best food truck in South Florida) and dessert at Sweetness Bake Shop. I had featured Sweetness on this past Lovable Friday, so I thought it would be appropriate to pay it my first visit! My full review is on Yelp, but to make a long story short & sweet (appropriate), it was lovely. My favorite were the Guayabera cupcakes, which were pure heaven. In fact, I would go back just to eat those. Over and over again. However, the bakery is full of all sorts of goodies, including daily rotating cupcake flavors, which leaves me with quite a few new treats to try for a long time to come! And if that sounds like a challenge…it is! Better up my cardio! ;)
